Centering Community Expertise in the Design of SEL Arts Programs

What is Community Expertise? There are many ways to define this, for the purposes of this presentation we are talking specifically about it in relationship to arts programming in various community and institutional settings. Traditionally we use outside resources or “best practices” to design and implement arts programming. 

However, using an assets based approach, that acknowledges and uses community culture and it’s unique voices; arts programming within communities can truly serve their needs. Our role is to help cultivate and support these community voices.

How SEL is applied to art, oftentimes, is a natural fit, it lends itself to social emotional learning because it encourages self expression, connection building, open dialog, and new perspectives.  There are many ways to use basic themes within SEL with the work you are doing.  In the next slides you will see how it can be intertwined with arts programming for: the student arts league, museums, non-profits, public schools, incarcerated settings and in reentry services.
